Fun With Camera Filters - Camera Filters & Camera Filter Techniques

Oh my - just look at the fun that an adventurous photographer can have with camera filters!

Four of my favorite inexpensive filters:

1. IR (Infared) Filter - Works best when puffy white clouds are in place. Also keep an eye out on ponds and lakes on cloudy days that are surrounded with trees decked in full-foliage.

To process an infrared photo, try the following:

- auto equalize

- create a duplicate layer and leave at 100% opacity

- adjust the color balance (the midtones only), while preserving luminance

 - experiment with the channel mixer as follows and adjust opacity as desired:

RED OUTPUT = Red 0%, Green 0%, Blue 100%

BLUE OUTPUT = Red 100%, Green 0%, Blue 0%

GREEN OUTPUT = Red 0%, Green 100%, Blue 0%

Example of IR Post Processed Digital Photo using this technique:

The original photo is of course, the first photo. The last three are various post processed versions.

Or, try the following:

- auto equalize

- create a duplicate layer and leave at 100% opacity

- adjust the color balance settings, experimenting with the midtones while preserving luminance

- erase the areas of the photo that you wish to have a different colors and continue to repeat the process until you have achieved the desired effect

Example of IR Post Processed Digital Photo using this technique:

When shooting, also try experimenting with the white balance.
